Design 99 visited Augie to discuss their work with students: Clearing the path to the future: Garbage totems being my personal favorite.
Their visit proved great conversation around such questions as “What is design?” and “What is the purpose of art?”
A short pictorial re-cap of their visit and one design classes visual response — a time machine created from found trash around campus.
A moment from this performance I will never forget:
The class made their way across campus with a hospital bed collecting discarded items for the assemblage. A sub-set of the group wanted to back track across campus in order to gather items from the art department. Along the way, people who had just seen them with the time machine asked: “where is the time machine?” To which one of the student designers immediately replied “When is the time machine? not where is the time machine.”
