Action Painting

A group of students charged with coming up with an experience that would engage the campus decided they would do “action painting.” As they sat in a small group trying to figure out the logistics… one bored soul decided to Google action painting… and this is what I overheard:

Hey guys, have you ever heard of Jackson Pollack? Evidently he invented action painting. Look at his work.  It seems he used a brush… maybe we should drop the paint balloon idea and use a brush. What do you think?

 

This moment, affirmation for me to keep my mouth shut. Let young designers and artist learn, be curious, fail— take up their own space. The longer I teach, the less interested I am in being the expert in the room… these are the moments that make my day.
